When I was gardening after work the other day, it struck me once again how we take on different roles depending on the situation in everyday life. Off the top of my head, I was able to identify the following roles:
- Builder
- Maintainer
- Consumer
While working in the garden, I noticed it because I was trimming hedges, doing typical maintenance tasks (maintainer). Fortunately, there is currently nothing new to create in the garden (builder). Sitting afterward in the garden and enjoying the surroundings is typical for the consumer.
The aforementioned roles can be found everywhere, for example, in software development. If you research online, you will find additional roles like the Transformer, which help to differentiate.
From my experience, I would say that rarely does someone always take on the same role. But everyone definitely has different strengths regarding the roles.
Which role you take on depends on the situation. A garden can be maintained for a long time, but eventually, certain trades like a terrace or a garden path need to be completely rebuilt because their basic structure is no longer sound. In such cases, you inevitably have to become the builder.
