Dear community, Joule is SAP’s AI solution. It’s designed to help us developers complete our tasks better. Examples of such support include explaining the content of source code or generating unit tests.

SAP has published several videos on the SAP Developers YouTube channel about Joule’s capabilities. These provide exciting insights for us ABAP developers. The video titles begin with “ABAP Cloud: Joule…” (here’s an example). That looks promising.

Unfortunately, Joule is currently only available in the cloud environment, which I find inappropriate. Especially in the on-premises environment, customers need comprehensive support in environments that have evolved over decades. Any help is welcome.

This also gives the impression that only cloud-oriented customers benefit from innovations, while on-premises customers initially financed all the great cloud products but now have nothing to gain from them. What a shame.

Another point gives me food for thought. A while ago, I read a paper about the limitations of AI. The basic statement was that AI works with complex heuristics, but it cannot use systematic modeling of a situation.

This contrasts with human intelligence, because we create a reduced model of reality based on the information gathered through our senses and work with it. In particular, we humans are capable of creating new models from information. It is well known from human history that this sometimes happens based on errors and still creates new knowledge or progress. AI could therefore have clear limitations that cannot be expanded (no GenAI possible).

Nevertheless, I’m an advocate of AI. What it does well should also be used to generate advantages in everyday work.

Have fun watching videos
