I haven’t had a chance to try SAP Joule for Developers yet. Judging by the comments on this SAP Community Blog, it doesn’t seem to be that easy.
Thanks to Jelena and Paul’s “Boring Enterprise Nerdletter“, I’ve now become aware of “Amazon Q Developer.” This is an AI provided by Amazon that supports the following four typical tasks with ABAP:
- Generating ABAP code
- Generating BTP and Fiori applications
- Generating test cases
- Documenting legacy ABAP code
The pricing models are described here. This page also features a comprehensive workshop.
Interestingly, the workshop offers standard information regarding AI. Much of it revolves around setting up the test environment. This is documented with countless screenshots, which, in my experience, is necessary. Amazon is completely blameless in this. It’s the typical installation hassle we’ve been dealing with for years.
However, writing your first few lines of ABAP requires far too much installation effort. And let’s not even talk about all the things that can go wrong during installation. Not very appealing for someone who can just try out Rust on their Windows or Linux desktop.
So far, GitHub Copilot has supported me with varying degrees of success. Perhaps Amazon Q Developer will soon be the answer. Who knows?
